Viet Nam’s National Defence Minister General Phung Quang Thanh Visit Myanmar

A four-day visit to Myanmar by a Vietnam’s high-ranking military delegation began from 10 to 13 August 2008 with both sides agreeing to consolidate defence co-operation. The Vietnamese delegation, led by Minister of Defence General Phung Quang Thanh, met with Myanmar’s military leader, Senior General Than Shwe, who is also Chairman of Myanmar’s State Peace and Development Council.

General Thanh said he believed that the people and army of Myanmar would overcome all difficulties to build up a wealthy and beautiful country, as well as a mighty army.

Senior General Than Shwe said he appreciated Viet Nam for its support, especially in helping in the aftermath of the recent Cyclone Nargis, which swept through Myanmar in May. He said that the traditional friendship and co-operation between the two countries would be consolidated and developed.

Previously, the Vietnamese delegation met General Thura Shwe Man, the third-highest member of the SPDC. The Vietnamese delegation also visited military units, historical sites in Myanmar and met with all staffs of the Embassy and Defence Attache’ Office of Vietnam in Yangon.
